Newsletter - What makes a good boss?
A UK workplace survey of 3000 employees aged 16+ between September and December 2010, carried out by First Direct Colourful Lives revealed the top five most appreciated qualities of a good boss – so what did the survey find?
1. Approachability
Most employees cited approachability as being the most important quality in a boss – even tempered and not unpredictable.
2. Good Communication
The best bosses were those who put time and effort into communicating to both individuals and whole teams.
3. Being Supportive
Each of your employees has emotional needs which bosses can support by giving praise but also re-directional feedback to put them back on track.
4. A Good Leader
This one covers a lot of areas but bosses who are able to provide their staff with direction, facilitate change, effectively manage their people and achieve results are those considered good bosses.
5. Respect
Bosses with a collaborative approach stimulate a workforce who is innovative and more engaged – this is towards everyone in the organisation.
Having reviewed these five areas, it became clear to me that bosses who are able to meet the following criteria will have an engaged and therefore highly productive workforce:
- Good stress management for you to be approachable even when times are more challenging
- Set time aside for your people
- Listen actively and with empathy
- Give feedback constructively
- Take a consultative approach whenever possible
If you feel that you and your managers need support in these areas contact Annie Mulady on 01628 475988 or annie@muladysolutions.co.uk to help you ensure that your staff consider you to be a ‘good boss’.
