Commerce chief: Credit crunch to strengthen traders
BUSINESSES who escape the bite of the credit crunch this year should be able to “survive almost anything”, Marlow Chamber of Trade's new vice-president has said.
Annie Mullady, who was recently elected to the executive of the 60 year-old organisation, believes the town is standing up well against the rigours of recession and said there are indications that the economic gloom may be lifting.
“The town still seems to be very busy which is obviously pleasing. Certainly when I tried to get a table at one of the restaurants recently it was packed,” she said.
“There are certainly positive signs and we are giving businesses in the town the best support we can.”
A number of shops have been left empty in the town centre but there interest has grown and some are now under offer.
Ms Mullady, a Marlow resident for 40 years said she believes the worst of the downturn will have passed by the end of 2009.
She said: “From a business perspective anyone who sees themselves through the year is in a strong position to survive almost anything.”
Ms Mullady, who runs her own training and development company – Mullady Solutions in Station Road - is keen for more businessmen and retailers to join the Chamber and play an active role in boosting trade.
The Chamber has proposed a number of ideas this year to help traders including an overhaul in the council car parking system, introducing 'pay on return' tickets.
It has also mooted a rewards card scheme to encourage shoppers to spend more in Marlow shops and another evening event to match the annual Christmas shopping in December.
